Hezekiah Chaney was the son of Richard Chaney who died intestate in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Richard’s son Abel Chaney, as administrator, filed the distribution of the estate on May 16, 1793.  The sureties were Charles Johnson and Thomas Chaney.  The distribution indicates that tenths were given to the folowing:
Thomas Rowles (husband of Sarah Chaney),
Hezekiah Chaney,
William Marsh (husband of Mary Chaney),
Nathaniel Hancock (husband of Sophia Chaney),
Michael Dunn (husband of Elizabeth Chaney),
Abel Chaney,
James Holmes (husband of Delilah Chaney),
Thomas Chaney,
Greenberry Gray (husband of Susannah Chaney),
Dennis Robinson (husband of Ann Chaney).

Hezekiah Chaney, born c1742, settled circa 1782 (some say 1775 but his name does not appear in earlier records) in the portion of Montgomery County that became Wythe County in 1789.  He obtained land on a state warrant for 200 acres in 1781 or 1872.  100 acres of this land was located on the north side of Lick Mountain.  The other 100 acres were on Sugar Run, a branch of Cripple Creek.  His property had a small stream today known as Chaney Branch (then known as McCendley’s or McKinley’s Run).  Hezekiah continued to add to his property until he owned several adjacent tracts of land totaling about 2,100 acres.

He eventually built and operated a mill on Chaney Branch that ran through the gap at the western end of the mountain.  It was about a half mile from his house.  In 1798, Hezekiah registered at the office of inspection a still with the capacity of 116 gallons.  He lived about forty years in the area clearing about 200 acres of his property.

On 12 March 1812, he wrote his will.  He died sometime in February 1813.  His will was probated on 13 April 1813.  By the time the will was written, five of his daughters were married and had already received their shares of their father's estate, as mentioned in the will.  They were:
Sally Williams,
Betsy Stone,
Polly Stone,
Jenny Cowden,
Nancy Cowden.
To his daughter Caty, he left two two Negro girls.
To his son Abel he left land that had already been deeded to him and 60 acres more.
Hezekiah, Jr., received the land already deeded to him.
To son Archibald he left the land "whereon I now live and all that tract I bought of Wiley, also 600 acres by survey joining Adam Ketterings, William Campbell and the place where Chaney lived.”  He was also to have a Negro boy.
He stated "I lend to my wife Jane, the rest of the property and she may give what she wishes to the youngest sons Hiram and Hozeah*."
The 300 acres between Sprakers, Stangers, and Goses were to go to Hiram and Hozea* upon their mother's death, remarriage or at her discretion.
(Wythe County Will Book 2, p. 88; Wythe County Order Book 1812-1815, April 13, 1813, p. 31).

A few years after Hezekiah’s death, when his children sold some of the land, it was found that there were problems with the exact boundary lines and acreage.  George Gose, one of the purchasers, brought a lawsuit in 1817 that questioned the acreage. The claims were eventually worked out with Gose obtaining the questioned property and his purchasing more of the Chaney land.  There was another suit filed by Alexander Smyth against Hezekiah’s widow in 1815.  Again it concerned claims involving the original 1796 grant.  Eventually, these conflicts were settled.  By 1830, none of the Chaney family lived in the area.

His surname was usually recorded as "Chaney" but other spellings, Cheney and Cheyne, are common.  Some of his children and there descendants used "Cheyne."

Name-Var:    __ ___ ____
Birth:    between 1793 and 1796    Wythe County, Virginia (When his father died in 1813, Hosea was listed as an "infant" which meant that he was not yet 21 years old.  In March 1814, Hosea when a piece of the property he had inherited was being sold, his guardian, Rev. John Stanger, acted for Hosea who was still not of age.  He married Sarah Golding/Golden in 1817, he evidently was of age by that time.)

In the 1880 census of his son, Robert, his state of birth is listed as North Carolina although his son, Hezekiah, listed the state to be Tennessee. In 1900, the census record of Hezekiah listed the state to be Missouri.  It most likely that he was born in Wythe County, Virginia.

In the 1840 census of Newton County, Missouri, it is indicated that he was born c1800).5,35,36,37

Death:    after __ ___ 1852    (No record of his death has been located.  His widow was living among his sons in Carroll County, Arkansas, in 1860.  He evidently was not living at that time.  A family tradition has the brothers moving to Central Texas just before 1850 but their father is not mentioned.  None of the family has been located in the 1850 census.  A "Hosa" Chaney appeared on a Carroll County tax list but it is unclear if this was him or his son of the same name).49
