1/M Andrew Jackson REED10

During the Civil War, in February 1862, he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army.  He fought in the battles of Gettysburg, Richmond and Petersburg.  There is no report of his being wounded.  A family story reports that Andy and some other soldiers were walking down a road in Murray County.  They passed a group of young ladies, among them Elizabeth Springfield, standing beside the road. The soldiers talked boastfully among themselves loud enough to be heard by the girls.  The fair-haired Elizabeth heard Andy say, "The blonde is mine!"  After the War, Andy made good his claim and the two were married. (Photo, right: Andy and Elizabeth)

The Reed family who lived in Dalton, Georgia, was directly in the path of Sherman's drive to Atlanta.  Resentment of the Yankees hung on for many years.  Andy and his wife passed this dislike of Northerners and carpetbaggers on to their older children.

Another family story, passed down in Andrew's brother Jasper's family, reports how Jasper used to talk of Andy being in the Ku Klux Klan.  Someone would take Jasper's mule out of the barn at night and ride it after it had plowed all day.  Jasper was afraid to complain about it because he suspected that it was Andy and the KKK.

Andy wanted to farm but there was little productive farm land in that area of Georgia since so much of the land had been over farmed.  When he heard of the rich black lands of central Texas, probably from several relatives who had moved there, he decided to join them.  So, Early in 1889, he loaded his family, except for Alice, and belongings into two covered wagons and joined 14 other families also moving to Texas.  One of their wagons was laden with family belongings and food.  The other wagon carried the family although the children usually walked which helped to keep them out of mischief although they enjoyed camping out and the new scenery.  They settled near Moody in McLennan County where Andy began farming.  Alice and her husband left Georgia in 1891 and came to Texas by train to join the rest of the family in McLennan County.

According to Johnnie Patterson Allen in her book, NO CRYSTAL STAIR, her grandmother, Alice Reed, told her children that Andy had a quick temper and took offense easily.  Once his best friend, a Mr. S----, made some teasing remark.  Andy thought Mr. S---- was "making light"of him.  Andy couldn't tolerate that. he pulled his knife to attack Mr. S----. Friends intervened.  Andy's friend was flabbergasted.  He said, "Why, Andy, how could you think I would make fun of you?''

Elizabeth died in 1894.  Andy followed her in 1896.  Several children, still minors, went to live with various siblings and their families.
