Hezekiah "Kye" Chaney
Family Group

Hezekiah CHANEY;1,2 Hezekiah was called "Kye." One of his sons, "Bud," was named Harrison Kye and later generations came to believe that Kye's given name was also Harrison Kye. It is possible that Kye came to call himself Harrison Kye since his tombstone reads "H.K. Chaney." Bud was often called Harrison Kye, Jr. Census records and other sources have shown that Kye's given name was, in fact, Hezekiah. Kye had three known brothers: Robert E. "Bob," Ninevah "Bud" and Hosea. Bud was killed during the time of the Civil War and is buried in Rule Cemetery, Carroll Co., Ark. Bud, listed as "Neniveh," was listed in Hezekiah's household when the 1860 census was taken. Hezekiah and Ninevah Chaney were both in Company G, 38th Arkansas Infantry although the records have yet to be examined. When the 1860 census was taken Hosea lived between Bob and Kye.
Jesse Gerald Chaney recalled that his father mentioned an "Aunt Jane" who married Bill Cross and lived in Coryell Co., Texas. (Jane was evidently an older cousin, not an aunt.  See: Zuritha Chaney Clark.) Kye may have been born in Missouri although this has not been proven. He was reared and married in Carroll County, Arkansas. All of his children were born in Carroll County except the youngest, Zettie, who was born in Little Rock. Two of his children are buried in Rule Cemetery, Rule, Carroll County, Arkansas. The gravestones are each inscribed only "Kye Chaney child." The family left Arkansas and arrived in central Texas around 1890. Some of Kye's nephews and nieces were living in or around Moody, McLennan County, Texas, by that time. It is unclear who arrived first or if they came as a group. By the late 1890's, Kye and some of his brother Robert's children were firmly established in southern McLennan and northern Bell Counties, Texas. Many descendents could still be found almost one hundred years later. The Chaneys are considered among the early settlers of Bell County. Frances died on 9 July 1904 and was buried in Moody Cemetery on the south side of Moody in McLennan County. Kye died on 20 May 1907 and was buried next to Frances. Their graves are in a cemetery plot shared with the family of his cousin, Marvel Stone Chaney. NOTE: The name Hezekiah was a very popular name for Chaney lines although it does not seem to be one used by the Overton County, Tennessee, family. Several are recorded and accounted for, but no connection with the earlier ones has been made with Kye.  NOTE: When a great grandson, Charles Claude Chaney, had yDNA testing done, it was shown that the line descends from Richard Cheyney who came from England to settle in Maryland c1850.  It now seems probable that Kye's father was Hosea Chaney, who was in Newton County, Missouri, in 1840 and Sullivan County, Indiana, in 1830.  He appears to have been a son of Hezekiah Chaney who died in the early 1800s in Wythe County, Virginia.  Further research is needed!)

Father: (probably Hosea) CHANEY ( -1842)
Mother: Sarah A. (--?--) (1795-1870)

Marriage: cir __ ___ 1859 Carroll Co., Arkansas.8,5

Spouse: L. Paulina Frances GOAD9 The headstone over her grave in Moody Cemetery, Moody, McLennan County, Texas, records her names only as "L.P. Chaney, wife of H. K. B. 6 May 1846. D. 23 Feb 1904." The 1900 census reports her birth as being in May 1844. It is known that she was called "Fanny" or "Frances" which raised questions about the headstone inscription. Also, the death certificates of some of her sons record her maiden name as Goode or, more often, Goad. Examination of Carroll County, Arkansas, census records of the period when she and Kye lived there show only one Goad family but no Goode family. This family (although the name is spelled "Gourd" which was not an unusual occurrence) appears in the 1850 Census of Walker County, Georgia. In later census records her state of birth is usually recorded as Georgia. It is most likely that her maiden name was Goad. The names of her children reflect some of the names of the Goad family children and, for the most part, not her husband's family. As reported, her place of birth is recorded as being in Georgia.
According to Kenneth Haas of Bettendorf, Iowa, who has compiled a history of the Goad families in America after years of extensive research, only a very small number of Goads resided in Georgia during the period when she would have been born. In fact, only one group, that of Ephraim and Susannah Goad and some of their children, was living in Georgia during the 1840's and recorded there in Walker County during the 1850 federal census. Mr. Haas has noted that it was quite common for members of the Goad family of that time to be called by their middle name rather than their first.
The 1850 census record of Ephraim and Susannah Goad shows a daughter, age five and born in Georgia, named Paulina F. This is certainly Frances Goad. The 1860 federal census records Ephraim and Susannah Goad in Carroll County, Arkansas. This is the same vicinity, Osage Township, where Hezekiah and Frances lived. In the Carroll County, Arkansas, 1870 census, her name was recorded as "Perlenia" that appears to be a corruption of "Paulina." It is noted that Frances named one daughter Sarah Lou Phebe. Sarah seems to have been her mother-in-law's name. Lou is perhaps for her mother who was usually called Susannah although in one census her name was recorded as "Louisiana" which indicates that her full name might have been Louisa Susannah. Phoebe (or Phebe) was the name of one of Frances' younger sisters. She also had a brother named General Harrison Goad and named one of her sons, Harrison Kye. She had a sister, Nancy A., and named a daughter Nancy A.
