Ephraim Goad
(1805-1876)
of Tennessee, Georgia & Arkansas

     His parents have not been definitely identified although researchers feel that he was a grandson of Abraham Goad who lived in Anderson (from which Campbell County was later formed) at the appropriate time. Abraham was a son of John Goad of Bedford County, Virginia. Abraham's sister, Joanna, was the mother of John Sevier the first governor of Tennessee. Some assume that Ephraim's father was Ayers Goad (born 1780 in VA & died 1855 in Green Co., IN) and Edith. (This is how it is recorded in this record.) Possibly it could have been Ayres' brother Joshua and Sally Smiddy. Both were sons of Abraham. Ephraim was living in Campbell County, Tennessee, in 1830 and was in Walker County, Georgia, in 1840. Ken Haas in his THE GOADS: A FRONTIER FAMILY, reports that Ephraim was in Hamilton County, Tennessee, in 1840. He was definitely in Walker County in 1850 when his name was recorded as "Gourd." By 1860, he was in Carroll County, Arkansas, where he settled in the Rudd/Piney Wood area. It is possible that he lived in the county just to the south, Madison County, Arkansas, since some Goads in that area knew him and refered to him as "Old Uncle Eph." In 1876, the Carroll County tax records list him as being dead with taxes unpaid. His estate was in probate court until 21 October 1884. A. G. Moore was named as the administrator of his estate. Mr. Moore was to pay Ephraim's heirs $21.12. He paid $19.42 and the court discharged him from further duties. Evidently, the remainder of the sum represented the amount for Mr. Moore's wife, apparently a daughter of Ephraim. His burial site has not been located.
     It is probable that he was married two times. Their is apparently a family tradition that Nancy was the fifth child of the first wife. After her mother's death, Nancy took care of the house until her father remarried.
